ystery Cargo, a simulation, is designed to increase fifth grade students' understanding of multiple scientific and mathematical concepts through application to a shipping incident in the Chesapeake Bay. In the simulation, students assist the crew of a Chesapeake Bay research vessel by analyzing sonar images to locate a missing boxcar, identifying a leaking liquid, predicting the movement of the substance and its impact on living organisms, and recommending a clean-up procedure.
Through the simulation, students explore six areas included in Virginia's fifth grade Standards of Learning: the physics of sound and light, the chemistry of solutions, the major kingdoms of living things, characteristics of the ocean environment, and changes on the Earth's surface.
Students from affiliated schools and school divisions of the MathScience Innovation Center are eligible to participate in the simulation. For details, visit www.msinnovation.info (Go to Schools > Lesson at the Center). Other divisions may participate through special arrangements (Go to > Center > Types of Membership).

ystery Cargo, the web site, is designed to increase fifth to ninth graders' understanding of scientific concepts in six major areas:
Mixtures
Layers and Currents
Sonar
Identifying Substances
Predicting Impact
Restoring the Environment
High school teachers of earth science, biology, chemistry, and elective classes in environmental science or oceanography will also find certain components applicable.
